Week 3_ Blog 2

In Chapter 5, socialization is the process by which people learn the rules, norms, and expectations of the culture over time. Socialization has three stages: Anticipatory socialization, organizational assimilation, organizational turning points. The stage that I dislike the most is organizational assimilation. This is the stage where a newcomer tries to make sense of the organization. When I start a new job, I hate being the new person mainly because I often get overwhelmed trying to get used to the company and trying to get to know the people. It is always frustrating the first couple weeks because it is too much information in a short amount of time.

I have to agree that organizational assimilation sucks. I typically work (when I'm not unemployed) as an Administrative Assistant and have for the last three years worked with temping agencies for jobs. So I frequently have to go through the whole first day of work bull. I hate it because I hate not knowing anyone, but everyone knows I'm the new girl so they either keep away as if I have cooties or they get super friendly and come across as superficial. Then there is the job and what you are suppose to do on the job discomfort. However, unfortunately these characteristics are all part of life. We experience the same thing when we move into a new place, or start a new class. Its life, what are you going to do about you, you know.

I agree organizational assimilation is the worse. It's never too fun starting a new job because you have learn all new information and a whole new culture. I started at my new job about a year at the Veterans Hospital in Palo Alto and to this day I am still learning. The VA Hospital system is so confusing and they do not do a good job of training new employees. They have an impossilbe computer system that does not allow you to use your mouse and they almost expect you to know the proper steps to get to the screen you want to. Being a new employee at a large organization can be overwhelming.
